Nocturne - Alternate Operating System for Spotify Car Thing Hardware

Nocturne OS running on Spotify Car Thing hardware

Project Overview: Nocturne is an innovative open-source operating system that breathes new life into discontinued Spotify Car Thing hardware. By engineering custom software solutions to interface directly with the device’s Amlogic S905D2 SoC, we’ve transformed these devices from single-purpose Spotify controllers into versatile music management systems, overcoming original hardware limitations through clever software architecture.

Originally relying on a Raspberry Pi to provide networking capabilities to the hardware (v1.0.0-beta.1 - v2.1.1-beta.5), Nocturne now uses a locally-running daemon to provide network connectivity to the hardware via Bluetooth tethering (v3.0.0 - Present).

Objectives

  1. Develop an alternative operating system that enables continued use of discontinued Spotify Car Thing hardware
  2. Engineer solutions to overcome the original 512MB RAM constraints while maintaining smooth performance
  3. Create a versatile platform supporting both automotive and desktop use cases
  4. Build an open-source ecosystem that enables community contributions and improvements
